Manduka Yoga Mat Frequent Questions

What is the difference between The Black Mat® PRO and the PROlite?

These mats are actually more similar than they are different! Both the Black Mat® PRO and PROlite™ feature the same fabric-like finish, superior cushion and slip-resistant, non-sticky surface and a lifetime guarantee. They have been Manduka’s top-selling high performance mats for 10+ years! So what sets them apart? Their weight, thickness and color. The PROlite™ was designed for yogis who want the look and feel of their Black Mat® PRO, but want to tote around a lighter version especially when they travel. Hence, the PROlite™ series.

Which side of the mat should I use?

The “top” of the mat has a slip resistant fabric-like finish. The bottom has a dot texture which prevents the mat from sliding on the bottom surface.

How do I get my mat to lie flat after it has been rolled up?

If you store your mat rolled up, try rolling it so the top surface is facing outwards. This keeps the corners of the mat flat when practicing.

How do I “break in” my new Black Mat® PRO?

Use it! Our customers have found that the best way to “break in” their mat is to use it on a daily basis. Another trick is to leave it in the sunshine for an afternoon or scrub it down with a sponge and a mixture of water and sea salt.

I have left my mat unrolled, but it still has an odor – now what?

In addition to keeping the mat unrolled, you can scrub the mat with a 50% water & 50% organic cider vinegar solution. Vermont Soap Cleaner will also do the trick.

How do I clean my Black Mat® PRO? What do I clean it with?

Vermont Soap or any non-solvent household cleaner and a damp cloth handle most situations. DO NOT put your mat in the washing machine- it will break it!

Suggested Cleaning and Mat Care Tips:

-          Make a wash consisting of 50% water 50% apple cider vinegar and wipe mat down.

-          The vinegar will remove any oxidation on the mat and restore the texture and color.

-          Make sure it is dry before rolling and storing away.

-          It is best to avoid getting the mat super wet, avoid extended  exposure to the elements (water, heat, etc..)

What is the mat made of?

All of our mats have been designed by yoga teachers for function, comfort and longevity. The PRO line is made from a blend of polyester and eco-certified PVC.

Is the Black Mat® PRO environmentally conscious?

We consider a PRO purchase an environmentally conscious choice.  PVC in general is not environmentally friendly. However, because our mats are designed for durability and last a life time (or two!) they rarely end up in landfills like inexpensive sticky mats.

One of the hazards of PVC is that it seeps toxins once in a landfill and that toxins are often released during the manufacturing process. We are happy to report that that the PRO manufacturing process is certified emissions free and therefore has less of an impact on the environment.

Eco-responsibility starts by reducing consumption. The product’s durability will drastically reduce the amount of yoga mats bought and thrown out into landfills. It also allows people to donate the mats when they are ready for something new to people who may not be able to afford a new yoga mat.

Is there latex in the PRO series?

No. Our PRO Series mats are latex-free. Latex is a by-product of natural rubber which may be hypo-allergenic to some people.

How do I keep from slipping on my recently purchased Black Mat®PRO?

There is a break-in period that everyone, including those who are on our mats, has to go through before the thin film wears off and the slipping is almost completely eliminated. Typically, it takes about three months of daily practice and a "little" bit of slipping during that time so that the friction of feet and hands wears on the mat.

Once the mat is broken in, if you sweat a lot, there still might be a slight amount of slip in some standing poses and poses like down dog, but if you keep your awareness and energy moving towards, instead of away, from your center of gravity, the "slippage" stops and one can stay firm in the pose. Actually, a little slippage comes in handy on some poses, for instance shoulder stand or plow pose, when it's nice to allow the head to slide and the neck to lengthen.

How are Manduka’s Black Mat® PRO and PROlite eco-friendly?

Manduka’s Black Mat®PRO and PROLite™ Mat, while made from PVC, are eco-certified. Lately PVC has received a lot of negative press, for good reason. PVC is commonly used in household plastic products because it is an extremely durable, synthetic material which can be shaped and molded in an infinite number of forms and densities. It can be toxic because it contains Dioxin, which is known to create birth defects. PVC products are manufactured to be safe as long as they don’t break down. Typically, the negative effects of Dioxin occur during manufacturing and disposal. When PVC products are disposed of in landfills, Dioxin can seep into water sources.

Manduka’s mats, designed to last a lifetime (or two), curb the amount of PVC mats that enter landfills every year. Also, during the manufacturing of PVC products, Dioxin may be released through the air. However, Manduka’s mats are manufactured through a process which ensures that PVC is not released into the atmosphere. The Manduka Black Mat®PRO and PROLite™ mat are the only yoga mats on the market certified by OEKO-TEX, an environmental certification agency in Europe for the fabric industry.

I bought one of your mats - the extra long version. If I wanted to shorten it, what is the best procedure to cut the mat?

We recommend a steel straight edge and a very sharp box knife. Use caution!
